Strong market share and operational excellence can only do so much to shield a company from macro pressures. Kirby ( KEX ) is the leading operator in inland barging (and the #2 player in coastal barging) and has a respectable operating history, but there’s little that management can do when the economy softens and refinery and chemical utilization weaken, driving lower demand for barging services. These conditions won’t be in place forever, but at this point it’s hard to call a turn in the economy....
