On May 4, 2019, more than 2,000 local Comcast employees and their families, friends and community partners will “make change happen” as they volunteer to improve communities across Oregon/SW Washington as part of the 18th annual Comcast Cares Day.
Comcast Cares Day is more than just a day – it is an illustration of the spirit of volunteerism that our employees bring to life each and every day. From using technology to create positive change, such as teaching digital literacy skills, to mentoring youth, to stocking food banks, to beautifying parks, Comcast employees volunteer during this celebration and throughout the year to make a lasting impact. To date, more than 1 million Comcast Cares Day volunteers have contributed over 6 million service hours to improve local communities at more than 10,000 projects. This year, the Company expects more than 100,000 volunteers from Comcast, NBCUniversal, and for the first time Sky, to participate in projects across the country and around the world.
Our flagship project in Oregon/SW Washington this year will be at Lent School in Southeast Portland. Serving a diverse student body, this aging school will get a top-to-bottom clean-up and beautification, including painting playground lines, landscaping the playground, renovating the teacher’s lounge, repairing the aging basketball courts and much more. About 400 volunteers will make this transformation happen with just a few hours of collaborative effort.
“As we celebrate our 18th annual Comcast Cares Day, we are delighted to partner with Portland Public Schools, and Hands On Greater Portland to give back to our local community,” said Rodrigo Lopez, Regional Senior Vice-President of Comcast Oregon/SW Washington. “It is incredible to see how we can drive meaningful change by bringing together our employees, their friends and families, and our community partners, both on this day and throughout the year. We are thankful for the participants and volunteers who continue to work to make a positive difference.”
Many of the projects to be tackled this year in Oregon/SW Washington will focus on helping those experiencing homelessness. Volunteers will refurbish Taylor’s House (a shelter for homeless teens in Salem), spruce up the Salvation Army Veterans and Family Center in Beaverton, make blankets for homeless teens, feed the clients of the Portland Rescue Mission and sort food at the Oregon Food Bank.
“It’s so important that Comcast is using its signature volunteer event to focus on individuals experiencing homelessness and the organizations that support them,” said Multnomah County Commission Chair Deborah Kafoury. “We know that when our community comes together around these issues, we can make a real difference.’’
The Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation will also provide grants to local partner organizations on behalf of volunteers who contribute their time on Comcast Cares Day. The grants will help Comcast’s partners continue their mission of serving the community throughout the year. To date, the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation has awarded nearly $25 million in grants to local nonprofit organizations who have served as partners on Comcast Cares Day.
