AC:CC - FAA halts flights at LaGuardia amid broader weather advisory

The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday issued a ground stop LaGuardia Airport in New York due to clouds of smoke obscuring the skies over the Northeast.

A ground stop was instituted at 12:50PM ET at the New York hub for domestic flights and is due to remain in place until 2:15PM ET. A ground delay has also been put in place at Newark International airport. The agency added a further advisory “wind and haze” are affecting flying conditions across all airports New York City, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia.

The adverse weather conditions are a result of wildfires raging across Canada, in particular across Quebec and Ontario.

According to FlightAware, about 1500 flights have been delayed across the US, adding to just under 100 cancellations thus far as actions to curb flight schedules are put in place.

Still, the cancellation and delay trends in the US are muted in comparison to Europe where, for example, both Schiphol airport in Amsterdam and Charles de Gaulle in Paris have each delayed hundreds of flights amid ongoing labor disputes. French trade unions in particular have walked out amid unrest over pension reforms, adding to air traffic controller walkouts.

The US Global Jets ETF ( NYSEARCA: JETS ) clung on to a modest gain in afternoon trading on Wednesday.
