Germany seeks to have the best equipped army division among European allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization by 2025, Reuters reported Monday.
The country’s Army Chief Alfons Mais said he is optimistic about that timeline. The country currently doesn’t have any combat-ready divisions among its more than 20,000 troops.
The goal is to have the first division operating by 2025, followed by a second one two years later. The buildup comes as Western European countries respond to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Germany plans to buy 60 Chinook helicopters from Boeing for $8.7 billion, according to multiple media reports. U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin ( NYSE: LMT ) and German manufacturer Rheinmetall ( OTCPK:RNMBF ) ( OTCPK:RNMBY ) in April said they’ re collaborating on a rocket artillery system made in the country.
