LORL - Telesat TIM Brasil successfully test LEO satellite backhaul
Telesat (LORL) and TIM Participações (TSU) have completed first-of-its-kind on-orbit testing across several applications with Telesat's Phase 1 Low Earth Orbit satellite. The companies leveraged an 85 cm Intellian parabolic antenna for uplink and downlink to the LEO satellite, and achieved an average 38 millisecond round trip latency on 5G mobile data traffic performance - testing applications like 1080p YouTube streaming, videoconferencing, WhatsApp voice over LTE and interface compatibility. That low latency offers a "compelling" opportunity for operators like TIM to expand mobile and Internet services, the companies say. Telesat Lightspeed production satellites in two years will be more capable, but the Phase 1 LEO satellite offers an excellent demonstration of performance, they say.
