CSX - U.S. railroads sets record intermodal month in September carloads down 9.7%
The Association of American Railroads ((AAR)) reports September U.S. rail traffic down 1% Y/Y to 2,543,429 carloads and intermodal units, comprising of carloads down 9.7% and containers and trailers volume up 7.1% during the month. "September 2020 was the fourth best intermodal month in history for U.S. railroads, as retailers and others restocked their inventories and prepared for the holiday season," says AAR Senior Vice President John T. Gray.8 of the 20 carload commodity categories saw carload gains; however, coal posted the major decline of 24.2%, excluding which carloads were down 2.9% in September.Total U.S. carload traffic for the first nine months of 2020 was 8,567,803 carloads (-15.3% Y/Y); and 10,034,360 intermodal units (-5.9% Y/Y)."Meanwhile, rail carloads, which don’t include intermodal, remained down in September compared with last year, but showed marked improvement compared to a few months ago, especially if you exclude coal," adds Gray.On weekly basis, U.S. railroads recorded a marginal increase
