RDI - 'Jungle Cruise' tops expectations at box office adds $30M more on Disney Plus
Jungle Cruise (DIS +0.2%) led at the domestic box office over the weekend, as expected, with a better-than-expected $34.2M in receipts. That's no Black Widow ($80M opening) or F9 (CMCSA -0.9%; $70M). But the Disney ride-based film has opened during a nationwide surge in the COVID-19 Delta variant, and had been expected to perhaps crest $30M on the high end of expectations, so it cleared a heavily lowered bar. Notably, it's part of Disney's day-and-date strategy of releasing simultaneously on its Disney Plus streaming service for a $29.99 Premier Access charge, and now that Disney is sharing more of that information, we learn that Jungle Cruise generated another $30M on Disney Plus - which was more than its international take ($27.6M). And its theatrical take still topped some other recent high-profile films also available online: Space Jam: A New Legacy (T +0.2%) opened to $31M; Godzilla vs. Kong to $31M;
