T - 'Mortal Kombat' leads Warner to another box-office win as theaters awaken
Mortal Kombat made a splash on an unusually busy weekend at the movie box office, the best overall weekend since the COVID-19 pandemic began more than a year ago. The film also marked another relative win for Warner Bros. (T), which is cleaning up in early reopened-theater action even with its plan to simultaneously release its 2021 films on HBO Max. Mortal Kombat led the chart with $22.5M in receipts, especially strong considering its violent R rating. That's the second-highest opening total since Warner's Godzilla vs. Kong pulled in $31M in March. Mortal Kombat also added $27.6 internationally for a global total of $50.1M. But it was also just slightly better than Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train, made by Sony's (SONY) FUNimation Entertainment.
