NTDOY - 'Spider-Man 2' Becomes Fastest Selling Video Game For Sony PlayStation

The holiday shopping season has only just begun, but already %Sony () is reporting that its new “Spider-Man 2” title has become the fastest selling video game ever for its %PlayStation console.
Sony reported in a blog post that the Spider-Man 2 video game sold more than 2.5 million physical and digital copies in its first 24 hours of release, breaking all previous sales records at the company.
The game, developed by Insomniac Games, has won rave reviews since it was released on Oct. 20 for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console.
Spider-Man 2 was one of several new highly anticipated video games launched over the past week.
“Super Mario Bros. Wonder” and “Sonic Superstars” have also been released in recent days as video game developers and console makers gear-up for the Christmas sales rush.
Despite the big first day sales of Spider-Man 2, the game has failed to top sales of rival %Nintendo () “Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” game, which sold more than 10 million copies in just three days upon its release in May of this year.
The strong sales of video games made for consoles have bucked industry forecasts that have called for a sales decline as gamers migrate to personal computers and smartphones.
Sony’s stock has gained 23% over the last 12 months to trade at $82.70 U.S. per share.
