RDI - 'Spider-Man' stuns with third-best opening ever
Omicron, whomicron? Moviegoers seemed unconcerned with a cascading wave of COVID-19 shutdowns across sports and other entertainment, as Spider-Man: No Way Home (NYSE:SONY) didn't settle just for pandemic records - but swung its way to the third-best opening weekend of all time. The film drew $253 million in ticket sales domestically - far ahead of some higher-end estimates for $150 million, a figure it almost hit in its first day. And while it's distributed by Sony as part of that studio's deal for Spider-Man property, it shows the staying power of Marvel (NYSE:DIS) content: The only two films that opened bigger domestically were Marvel's Avengers: Endgame ($357.1 million) and Avengers: Infinity War ($257.7 million).
