(CSE: FTEL , OTC: FSTTF ), reports thatDon Freschi of Fenix Advanced Materials, First Tellurium’s strategicpartner for potential future tellurium extraction and purification,recently presented an update on development of Fenix’s solid-state,lithium-tellurium battery. Fenix is a producer of ultra-high purity metals, achieving purities ofup to 99.99999% at its lab and plant in Trail, British Columbia.Metals produced by Fenix include tellurium, antimony, indium andcadmium.

Fenix continues to advance its lithium-tellurium (LiTe)solid-state battery (SSB) developed in partnership with UBC Okanagan(as reported March 2022 and Sep 2022). The Fenix SSB is expected tohave a far higher charging capacity, much smaller size, and a batterylife up to 400% that of lithium-ion batteries with no chance ofcatching fire.

“We had to make these batteries safe,” said Freschiin his presentation. “So we started playing around with tellurium,which started working well with a lithium anode. Then we focused on atellurium-sulfur cathode because tellurium and lithium have thehighest theoretical capacity for (electrical) storage. We’re makingthat system very safe.”

The number of lithium-ion battery-based fires isgrowing with enormous frequency worldwide. In Toronto, the number oflithium-ion battery fires nearly doubled in 2023, according to TorontoFire Services. The Wall Street Journal reported on March 17, 2024 that In New York and other cities nationwide, firedepartments are increasingly grappling with rapidly burning, toxicblazes ignited or exacerbated by lithium ion-batteries in everythingfrom electric cars, bikes and scooters to cellphones, laptops, powertools and vape pens.

A recent apartment building fire in Harlem, New Yorkthat killed a young journalist was caused by a lithium-ion e-bikebattery. The New York Times reported that it was the first death inNew York City this year to be linked to the batteries, which wereblamed for over 250 fires and 18 deaths in 2023.
