In an article last week, 65% of U.S. Stocks are Down in 2020, it was noted that the year-to-date gains for the capitalization-weighted large cap indices cover up a broad universe of domestic stocks that have lost investors money in 2020. That article also showed that through Labor Day, the median stock in the United States was actually down 13%.
In this article, I wanted to use that same broad-based measure of domestic stock market performance, the S&P Total Market Index (ITOT), and demonstrate how few stocks are actually driving the index
