Alberta's privacy watchdog has launched an investigation into the province's energy regulator over whether it had a legal obligation to disclose information about the continuing leak from Imperial Oil's ( NYSE: IMO ) Kearl oil sands project, The Globe and Mail reported late Wednesday.
Toxic tailings have been seeping from the project since May , but the federal government, local indigenous groups and the public at large were not informed until months later.
The Alberta Energy Regulator has maintained that the duty to inform the public belonged to Imperial Oil ( IMO ).
The company has said it is working to determine the cause of the seepage and that the issue is related to gaps within the seepage interception system.
Imperial Oil ( IMO ) recently reported Kearl's Q4 gross production totaled 284K bbl/day, in line with its previous record quarterly production set in Q4 2020 .
