ABC - AmerisourceBergen sued by DoJ over suspicious opioid orders

• The Department of Justice ((DoJ)) filed a civil lawsuit against AmerisourceBergen Corporation ( NYSE: ABC ) on Thursday, accusing the medical distributor of failing to flag suspicious orders of opioids and other controlled substances, Reuters reported.
• DoJ, in a complaint filed in Philadelphia federal court, said that AmerisourceBergen ( ABC ) and two units violated their legal duty to resolve suspicious activity in customer orders or alert the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) of suspicious customer behavior.
• "Defendants have for years flouted their legal obligations and prioritized profits over the well-being of Americans," the federal agency said in the complaint that seeks unspecified damages.
• "The United States brings this suit to hold defendants accountable for their egregious failure to report suspicious orders and their role in contributing to the opioid epidemic."
• In April 2022, three leading drug distributors in the U.S., including AmerisourceBergen ( ABC ), reached a multibillion-dollar settlement with a group of state attorneys general to resolve the vast majority of the opioid lawsuits filed against the companies.
