MT - ArcelorMittal halts blast furnace at Asturias plant after fire

ArcelorMittal ( NYSE: MT ) said Thursday it is evaluating damage caused by a fire at one of its blast furnaces in the Asturias plant in Spain.

The steelmaker said a reaction took place at the plant's blast furnace A when hot metal touched water in the hearth of the furnace, causing serious damage including a hole in the blast furnace and forcing some hot metal out of the tuyere (the nozzle through which air is brought into a furnace).

The furnace was undergoing scheduled maintenance to replace the tuyere when the incident took place.

The extent of the damage as well as the cost of repairs are being assessed, the company said.

ArcelorMittal's ( MT ) Asturias blast furnace A was brought back online in early February after being idled due to unfavorable market conditions .
