Reserve assets in Japan fell slightly to $1.251 trillion in August 2023 from $1.254 trillion in July, dragged lower mainly by a decline in foreign currency reserves.
The Bank of Japan must keep its ultra-loose monetary policy for the time being as the prospect for achieving the central bank's 2 percent target of 2% in a convincing way remains uncertain, board member Junko Nakagawa said in a speech.

Foreign exchange reserves in Indonesia dropped to a ten-month low of USD 137.1 billion in August 2023, from USD 137.7 billion the previous month.
In the U.S. on Wednesday, all three major indexes ended in the red as investors remain cautious as stronger-than-expected US services sector data stoked inflation and rate hike worries. The Nasdaq Composite retreated 1.06% to close at 13,872.47 points. The benchmark S&P 500 settled 0.69% lower at 4,465.60 points, while the blue-chip Dow slipped 0.57% to finish at 34,444.38 points.
Meantime, Friday will see CPI readings in the mainland China, amid worries that deflationary pressure may deepen.
Oil prices edged higher on Thursday on anticipated U.S. crude stock draw.
Brent crude futures edged up 12 cents to $90.72 a barrel by 0019 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures gained 11 cents to $87.65.
Gold held below $1,920 an ounce on Thursday, holding a recent decline and facing pressure from a rallying dollar as stronger-than-expected US services sector data raised inflationary and rate hike concerns.
