SATS - AT&T OneWeb team up on remote Internet access solution
AT&T (T +0.8%) and low Earth orbit satellite company OneWeb are teaming up to improve access for AT&T's business customers in "challenging" geographic locations. The strategic deal will provide service backed by OneWeb's network of satellites - of which 288 have been launched, with a plan for global coverage by a fleet of 648 satellites by the end of 2022. AT&T's business and government customers in Alaska and the northern U.S. states will be covered later this year by the offering. It's meant to complement AT&T's existing access solutions. "Nationwide, more than 9 million business customer locations are within 1,000 feet of AT&T fiber," the carrier says. "However, there are still remote areas that existing networks can't reach with the high-speed, low-latency broadband essential to business operations." OneWeb is owned by a consortium of investors after being bought out of bankruptcy, mainly by India's Bharti Global and the British government.
