Bain Capital and Hellman & Friedman LLC are near a deal to acquire Athenahealth Inc. for about $17B including debt, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The two private equity firms are close to complete the deal in the coming days, according to the sources. Focused on cloud-based software solutions to healthcare providers, Watertown, Mass. Athenahealth competes with firms such as Cerner (NASDAQ:CERN). Since 2019, it was held under the ownership of Elliott Management through its private equity arm, Veritas Capital, and Evergreen Coast Capital. The duo was eyeing several strategic options for the company, including a potential sale or IPO, Bloomberg reported in September.
