- The Biden administration is expected to declare the current monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency as soon as Thursday, The Washington Post reported Thursday.
- The Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra is expected to make the announcement at an afternoon briefing, the paper said citing two officials who spoke on anonymity as they were not authorized to comment. HHS and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
- An emergency declaration is expected to improve awareness, unlock additional flexibility and raise more funding to fight the viral disease.
- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. has confirmed more than 6,600 monkeypox cases so far.
