PRGO - Biden to sign executive order broadening access to contraception

The White House announced that President Joe Biden will sign an executive order on Friday to strengthen and expand access to contraception intended to limit unwanted pregnancies.

It is the third executive order Biden has issued since the Supreme Court ruling in June 2022 on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that overturned the constitutional right to abortion established in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

"Contraception is an essential component of reproductive health care that has only become more important in the wake of Dobbs and the ensuing crisis in women’s access to health care," the White House said in a fact sheet on the order.

According to the White House, it is Biden’s first executive order on reproductive health care that specifically addresses protecting and broadening access to contraception.

Among the actions that the administration intends to achieve through the executive order is the promotion of access to over-the-counter contraception, including emergency contraception.

In May, a panel of independent experts at the FDA overwhelmingly endorsed Opill, an over-the-counter birth control pill developed by Ireland-based Perrigo ( NYSE: PRGO ). If the FDA follows their recommendation, Opill will become the first birth control pill in the U.S. available for over-the-counter use.
