Ahead of its Investor event Wednesday afternoon, BlackBerry ( NYSE: BB ) rolled out an early access release of its next QNX Software Development Platform, made to help automakers and Internet of Things developers build new products off the company's operating system platform.
BlackBerry stock ( BB ) was up 2.4% at midday Wednesday.
The new QNX SDP 8.0 is meant to tap the increasing number of multi-core processors being chosen for products by automakers and IoT systems developers, improving performance while maintaining high security.
The new architecture has shown a 1-to-1 performance scaling factor as the number of cores increase, the company said. And it lays groundwork for the next-generation QNX product portfolio, including QNX OS for Safety, QNX Hypervisor and QNX Hypervisor for Safety.
"The automotive industry is redefining software in the vehicle," said QNX Head John Wall. "Automotive architectures are transitioning to zonal, central compute and ultimately Software Defined Vehicles. The top to bottom scalability inherent to SDP 8.0, the QNX OS for Safety and the QNX Hypervisor makes this a natural choice for automakers looking for a total car OS."
Retail investors will get the chance Wednesday afternoon for live questions/answers with John Giamatteo, president of BlackBerry Cybersecurity, and Mattias Eriksson, president of BlackBerry IoT, along with Investor Relations VP Tim Foote. The event begins at 3 p.m. ET .
