2025-04-16 16:37:45 ET
Summary
- The BlackRock Enhanced Global Dividend Trust offers global market exposure and a 9.55% yield, but it only has limited exposure to global assets.
- The fund's high U.S. exposure has hurt performance, underperforming global indices but still better than the S&P 500.
- Despite its attractive yield, the fund's current U.S.-heavy allocation is risky given market trends favoring foreign equities.
- The fund has seen its NAV decline since the start of the year, suggesting that the distribution may not be safe.
- The fund trades at a 9.59% discount to NAV, but its U.S. focus may impact future performance.
The BlackRock Enhanced Global Dividend Trust ( BOE ) is a closed-end fund that provides investors with a way to access global markets and gain international exposure while still providing a very attractive level of income. This is something that could be attractive in the current market conditions, given that capital is currently fleeing out of U.S. dollar assets, which includes common equities. This is one big reason why the S&P 500 Index ( SP500 ), which tracks U.S. large-cap stocks, is down year-to-date while many foreign equity markets are up. We can see this by comparing the year-to-date performance of the iShares MSCI ACWI ex U.S. ETF ( ACWX ), which tracks the performance of the MSCI All-Countries World Index but specifically excluding any American stock in the index, with the S&P 500 Index:
As we can see here, the iShares MSCI ACWI ex-U.S. ETF is actually up year-to-date in sharp defiance of the weakness in American markets. This clearly tells us that the current market turbulence has been largely limited to the United States, and indeed, investors who made efforts to properly diversify their portfolios internationally before the current turbulence began have seen their portfolios hold up reasonably well year-to-date. For those investors who have not yet achieved this international diversification, it could be a good time to start. The BlackRock Enhanced Global Dividend Trust may be one way to improve portfolio diversification while earning a fairly attractive 9.55% yield....
