BVN - Buenaventura stops operations at Peruvian mine after protests
Peruvian miner Buenaventura ( NYSE: BVN ) said late Monday it suspended operations at its Julcani silver mine until security conditions are improved, after protesters entered and destroyed part of the mine's facilities.
The company said a group of protesters committed acts of vandalism against the mine, forced workers to leave the facilities under threat, stoned offices and vehicles, and stole belongings.
The shutdown comes after protestors attacked Glencore's ( OTCPK:GLCNF ) ( OTCPK:GLNCY ) Antapaccay copper mine last month, while the huge Chinese-owned Las Bambas mine was placed on care and maintenance as road blockades prevented the arrival of key inputs .
