BKD - California AG accuses Brookdale of falsifying information for CMS ratings
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra has sued Brookdale Senior Living (BKD) accusing the nation's largest nursing home operator of providing false information to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for its "star rating" system of evaluating facilities.A news release from Becerra accuses Brookdale of lying to CMS to "fraudulently" increase its rating in an effort to attract more clients to their nursing homes.In addition, the lawsuit alleges that Brookdale didn't properly notify patients and their families of transfers or discharges. Such moves require 30-day notice or whenever is practically possible."As a result of these actions, Brookdale endangered the health of its patients and also left families scrambling to find other places to care for their loved ones," the news release states.Brookdale shares are up 4% to $6.73 in afternoon trading.
