SJR - Canada regulator said trying to speed up case against Shaw/Rogers deal
Canada's antitrust agency reportedly wants to speed up its suit attempting to block Rogers Communications (NYSE:RCI) $15.8 billion purchase of Shaw (NYSE:SJR) with a hearing in five to six months. Competition Bureau Canada wants to follow an expedited process for the case, according to a Reuters report, which cited a spokesperson for the agency. This would mean a hearing in five to six months, rather than the typical year period. Last Friday, Rogers (RCI) formally filed documents with Canada's Competition Tribunal to dismiss the case against its acquisition of rival Shaw (SJR). Late last month Rogers and Shaw agreed not to proceed with the deal until either a negotiated settlement with the Competition Bureau or a ruling from the Competition Tribunal.
