I recall when I worked in a financial institution, we had one elderly customer who would visit every month, the day after our new lending and certificate of deposit rates were published by our head office. She would come in and check on our current CD rates. She always complained that the available CD rates were significantly lower than they used to be decades ago and that she couldn't get much return on her money within the bank. It made sense at the time because rates were low. If the bank was lending money out cheaply, it wasn't going to pay top dollar for money to be deposited there....
