XLF - Democrats introduce financial anti-discrimination bill in Senate
Six Democratic senators have introduced legislation that would specifically prohibit banks and other financial firms from discriminating against customers based on their race, religion, sexual orientation, and other characteristics, in an effort to close a loophole in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.The Civil Rights Act lists kinds of businesses that aren't allowed to discriminate against its customers, including movie theaters, restaurants, and hotels. Since then, courts have ruled that the law doesn't apply to any businesses not included in that list.The new bill is sponsored by Senators Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Tina Smith of Minnesota, Cory Booker and Robert Menendez of New Jersey, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts of Massachusetts, and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland. It would explicitly ban banks and some other financial businesses to discriminate against customers.Currently, it's legal for banks and some other businesses to treat some customers differently as long as those customers eventually receive
