BUI - Energy transformation may 'feel like a slog' before gains - NextEra exec
Gargolas/iStock via Getty Images The integration of new power technologies may cause short-term discomfort but will launch a "wonderful transformation towards a cleaner power grid for society" within a decade, says Mark Ahlstrom, VP of renewable energy policy at NextEra Energy (NEE). Integrating new technology always poses a challenge, and "in the short-term, it can feel like a slog," Ahlstrom told the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners this week. Ahlstrom authored part of a draft report from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation focusing on grid transformation, which warns that the continued integration of large amounts of new technologies, including distributed resources, storage and inverter-based technologies, "could lead to inaccurate forecasting of anticipated net demand." Grid operators must improve the interconnection and use of inverter-based resources on the bulk power system, or they risk disruption to electric reliability, particularly in times of extreme weather, according to the report. The report,
