PSX - EPA issues emergency E15 waiver for second straight summer

In a big win for the biofuels industry, the Biden administration said Friday it issued an emergency waiver that will allow widespread sales of higher-ethanol E15 gasoline this summer, repeating a move used last year to help tamp down high pump prices.

The move will temporarily exempt the 15% ethanol fuel blend from volatility requirements that effectively block sales from June 1 to September 15 throughout much of the U.S.

The Environmental Protection Agency said the waiver will help reduce U.S. reliance on imported fossil fuels, support American agriculture and lower costs for consumers, noting the $0.25/gal discount that E15 holds over a standard E10 blend.

Ethanol industry advocates have been pushing for the waivers for several weeks, after the EPA said it would delay until summer 2024 a plan to make the E15 blend available in eight Midwest U.S. states under petitions from their governors.
