ERTH - EU countries strike deal on renewable energy law that backs nuclear

European Union countries' ambassadors reached agreement on a landmark renewable energy law that backs more allowances for nuclear energy and weakens a law to protect biodiversity, Financial Times reported Friday.
France's threat to block approval of renewable energy targets forced the European Commission to put forward an additional declaration that acknowledges the role of nuclear energy, placing it on a par with other renewables in efforts to decarbonize.
Other countries such as Germany and Denmark had opposed France's push, arguing that mixing nuclear into the renewable energy law could distract from the huge expansion of wind and solar needed to meet climate change goals.
The commission "acknowledges that other sources of fossil-free energy than renewable energy contribute to reaching climate neutrality by 2050 for member states who decide to rely on such sources of energy," the final document said.
France and Germany also were among a majority that supported heavy revisions to Brussels' flagship law to restore damaged ecosystems, allowing national governments far more leeway in applying the reforms.
It is not yet clear if the entire European Parliament actually will approve the document.
