The pan-European Stoxx 600 edged 0.39% lower, with sectors and major indexes spread across marginally positive and negative territory. Utility stocks logged the biggest losses, while mining and oil and gas stocks were up.

Coming up in the session: US and Canada unemployment figures expected later in the day.

In the bond market, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was down less than 1 basis point to 4.04%.

Germany's 10-year yield was down 1 basis point to 2.62%.

U.K.'s 10-year yield was down 1 basis point at 4.65%.
