Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:GOLD) has paid the first tranche of the $300 million settlement it agreed with the Tanzanian government to resolve disputes it inherited from Acacia Mining, including legacy land claims from the North Mara property. According to the press release, the company has paid $100 million to the government derived from the sale of some 1,600 containers of concentrate stockpiled from Bulyanhulu and Buzwagi, which will be followed by "five annual payments of $40 million each."
Endeavour Silver Corp. (NYSE:EXK) has restarted mining operations at its three high-grade, underground silver-gold mines in Mexico following approvals granted by that country's Secretariat of Health. According to the press release, the "mines and plants are currently ramping up activities to achieve normal operations and exploration crews will restart mapping, sampling and drilling programs in June." Bradford Cooke, Endeavour Director and CEO, commented:
"Following the recent government decree that mining is now an essential activity, we are efficiently ramping up our mining operations in a safe and timely manner. Everyone is happy to be returning to work where our strict health and safety measures take care of our people and their communities."
Japan Gold Corp. (TSXV:JG) has expanded its Sanru Epithermal-Gold Project in Northern Hokkaido, Japan, following the acceptance of new prospecting rights applications totalling 7,711 hectares covering prospective tertiary geology. John Proust, Japan Gold Chairman and CEO, explained:
"This new acquisition continues our ongoing evaluation of the prospective geology in Japan. The decision to further extend the Sanru Project was based upon the favourable structural controls on mineralization, host rock geology and the proximity of the Omui mine close by to the north. We look forward to the Barrick Alliance evaluation of the Sanru Project over the coming months."
Forum Energy Metals Corp. (TSXV:FMC) has announced drill results from six holes totalling 1,819 metres completed on its 100 percent-owned Fir Island uranium project in Saskatchewan's Athabasca Basin. According to the press release, the drilling successfully located "the prospective host structure, the East Channel Fault, for uranium mineralization," and a "50 metre offset of the unconformity, strong tectonization of the overlying sandstones and quartz remobilization." Ken Wheatley, Forum's VP, Exploration, commented:
"I am looking forward to following up on this drill program next winter as we have a much better handle on the East Channel structure that has all the characteristics of hosting a major uranium deposit."
