F - Ford tries a new road with tests of hydrogen fuel cells in electric E-Transits

Ford Motor Company ( NYSE: F ) said it will test a small fleet of prototype hydrogen fuel-cell versions of its electric E-Transit model in an initiative designed to determine if hydrogen fuel cells could be a viable workable option for customers hauling heavy goods long distances.
The test takes places amid some questions if battery electric vehicles will be unable to handle fleets that require high payloads, high daily energy consumption, extended range, or where there are limited opportunities for charging. Some analysis suggests that FCHEV offers a zero-emissions alternative that can address those deficiencies.
The Detroit automaker will lead a consortium that includes BP ( BP ) and Ocado ( OTCPK:OCDGF ) in the three-year project aimed at hydrogen and infrastructure. "Ford believes that the primary application of fuel cells could be in its largest, heaviest commercial vehicles to ensure they are emission-free, while satisfying the high daily energy requirements our customers demand," stated Ford's UK chairman Tim Slatter
Shares of Ford ( F ) fell 0.55% in premarket trading to $11.95.
