WZZAF - Frontier Airlines aims to add capacity after collapse of Spirit deal - Reuters

Frontier Group Holdings Inc ( NASDAQ: ULCC ) is aiming to add 20% in capacity through the close of the decade, according to Reuters.

CEO Barry Biffle told the outlet in an interview that the carrier is keen to take a greater share of the U.S. leisure travel market to become the preeminent budget airline in the US. By the close of 2022, the Colorado-based air carrier expects capacity to be nearly in-line with 2019 levels, with room to grow from that base.

That competition for market share now brings the airline into competition with former takeover target Spirit Airlines ( NYSE: SAVE ) and its prospective acquirer JetBlue Airways ( NASDAQ: JBLU ). Wizz Air ( OTCPK:WZZAF ) and Frontier chairman Bill Franke told Reuters that though it lost the bidding war over Spirit to JetBlue, the fallout is likely to leave it as “the only national ultra-low-cost carrier” left for US travelers.

Elsewhere, Franke told Reuters it has launched a cadet program to help shore up a pilot shortage.
