PLUG - FuelCell Plug Power fail to catch the meme stock wave

audioundwerbung/iStock via Getty Images Alternative energy names including FuelCell Energy ([[FCEL]] -5.2%), Plug Power ([[PLUG]] -4.7%) and Clean Energy Fuels ([[CLNE]] -1.4%) extend their recent weakness that appears to have been triggered by FuelCell's disappointing Q2 results. FuelCell has fallen nearly 11% since reporting on June 10 a slightly wider than expected FQ2 GAAP loss and missing revenue estimates, but over the same period, Plug has plunged nearly 10% and Clean Energy has shed 15% after the WallStreetBets crowd briefly spiked the latter to a two-month high. Ballard Power ([[BLDP]] -3.8%) shares, which have held up better during the period, succumbed to steep losses today. FuelCell's Q2 loss "validates previous suspicions" about the company, as low margins "exacerbate the shortcomings of FCEL's capital intensive business model," Bashar Issa writes in a new analysis posted on Seeking Alpha.
