The largest hospital operator in the U.S., HCA Healthcare ( NYSE: HCA ), announced Monday that a list containing the personal information of about 11M patients was exposed on an online forum in what appeared to be a data theft by an unknown party.
In a press release, the Nashville, Tennessee-based healthcare provider didn’t indicate how many customers were affected. However, citing the company, Bloomberg reported that the list could contain 27M rows of data from about 11M patients.
The company has informed law enforcement authorities and started an internal investigation involving third-party forensic and threat intelligence advisors.
The leaked data includes patients’ names, residential and contact details, and certain information on medical appointments.
However, HCA said the data breach didn’t involve clinical information, payment details, or sensitive information such as passwords, driver’s licenses, or social security numbers.
The theft is believed to have occurred at an external storage location used to automate the formatting of emails, the company added, noting that the incident is unlikely to cause a material impact on its operations or financials.
