A couple of days ago, The Information reported that Amazon Inc. ( AMZN ) is working on augmented-reality glasses in a bid to compete with Meta Platforms ( META ). Codenamed Jayhawk, Amazon’s AR glasses will include a camera, speakers, microphones, and a full-color display in one eye, with a late 2026 or early 2027 launch date. The announcement immediately brought Himax Technologies ( HIMX ) to mind, a semiconductor company I have covered before, thanks to the company’s ongoing strategic shift from traditional display driver integrated circuits (DDICs) to high-margin WiseEye AI solutions, silicon photonics and AI glasses, and smart glasses. Himax is a Taiwan-based semiconductor company that develops DDICs and timing controllers (Tcons) used in mobile phones, laptops, tablets, TVs, monitors, digital cameras, car navigation, and VR devices. More of that a bit later. The Info also reported that Amazon is developing AR glasses for its delivery drivers to help them sort and deliver packages by giving workers instructions on the screens, telling them where to deliver parcels. AR glasses are a type of smart glass that creates an augmented reality experience by overlaying digital information, including data and virtual objects, onto a user's view of the real world. In effect, these wearable devices blend physical and digital realms, enabling users to interact with both. Unlike virtual reality ((VR)) devices, AR glasses enhance the user's existing reality rather than create a completely immersive digital world....
