Horizon Technology Finance's ( HRZN ) dividend yield has swelled to its highest level on record. This has come with the business development company ("BDC") trading at a small premium to net asset value ("NAV") per share and faced with mounting investments on non-accrual status. HRZN focuses on originating venture debt to life science and technology companies and has a portfolio valued at $622.7 million at fair value as of the end of its fiscal 2025 second quarter. The BDC last declared a monthly cash dividend of $0.11 per share , kept unchanged from its prior distribution, and $1.32 per share annualized for a 19.27% dividend yield. Adjusting for the pandemic, this yield forms the highest ever for HRZN since it became a public company. I last covered the BDC in 2023, a golden era for BDCs where a strong U.S. economy and elevated prime rates on the back of the aggressive Fed's rate hikes drove dramatic gains in NAV and distributions.
