VIACA - Horror flick 'Candyman' looks to prevail on slower movie weekend
Time to see if Ryan Reynolds' hero in Free Guy can hold off the Candyman. A same-named "spiritual sequel" to Candyman (the 1992 horror-film standby), from Jordan Peele of Get Out fame and Universal (NASDAQ:CMCSA)/MGM (OTC:MGMB), is the sole wide release at the box office this weekend. It takes on a surprising success in Disney's (NYSE:DIS) Free Guy, which in contrast to most films this summer retained much of its first-weekend box office into its second, and now tries for a third solid week. And while Candyman is unlikely to replicate Free Guy's surprising $28 million opening take, in a flat box office some $16 million-$17 million from Candyman should be good enough to displace the leader.
