Total housing starts fell to a 1.555 million annual rate in September from a 1.580 million pace in August, a 1.6 percent decrease.
Regionally, single-family and multifamily permits followed a broadly similar pattern with declines in September, but with the overall pace holding at solid levels.
Overall, housing activity has eased back from the surge in late 2020 but remains brisk.
