L - Loews Q3 earnings helped by insurance pipeline hotel operations lack of charges
Loews (NYSE:L) Q3 EPS of $0.85 rises from $0.50 in the year-ago quarter its three main businesses — CNA Financial (NYSE:CNA), Boardwalk Pipelines, and Loews Hotels — posted improved earnings from a year ago. CNA's (CNA) results increased on higher property & casualty non-catastrophe underwriting results, improved life & group business results primarily due to the absence of the active life premium deficiency charge recorded in Q3 2020, and the absence of a debt retirement charge taken in Q3 2020; those positive factors were partly offset by higher net catastrophe losses and lower investment gains. Q3 net catastrophe losses of $178M, including $114M for Hurricane Ida, increased from $160M in Q3 2020. CNA Financial income before income tax of $314M in Q3 2021 increased from $251M in the year-ago quarter. Boardwalk Pipelines' earnings were helped by higher revenue from growth projects recently placed in service and higher system utilization. Boardwalk Pipelines
