OMVJF - Merkel tries to calm Poland Ukraine fears over Nord Stream 2
German Chancellor Merkel reiterated during talks this weekend with Polish Prime Minister Morawiecki that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline must keep Ukraine as a transit country for Russian gas after 2024. Russia's five-year gas transit deal with Ukraine expires after 2024, and Russian President Putin has not given a firm commitment on extending it. "I have made clear that it is our concern that Ukraine remains a transit country for Russian gas," Merkel said at a news conference on Saturday. Ukraine fears Russia will use the pipeline as a geopolitical weapon and deprive it of billions of dollars in transit fees. Meanwhile, Gazprom (OTCPK:OGZPY) announced Friday that construction of the controversial project has been completed. And a senior U.S. State Department official says he delivered reassurances to Ukraine and Poland on mitigating any threat posed by the pipeline, but that the project is now a "reality."
