NBA - Milwaukee Bucks Win First NBA Title in 50 Years

The Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Phoenix Suns with a score of 105-98 in Game 6 to secure their first NBA championship since the 1970-71 season. The Bucks playoff run was headlined by NBA Superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who put up a legendary finals performance with 50 points , 14 rebounds , and 5 blocks . The Greek power forward was named finals MVP, though he acknowledged his supporting cast, including All-Star Guard Khris Middleton, Guard Jrue Holiday, and Head Coach Mike Budenholzer. Antetokounmpo signed a 5-year USD 228 Million contract with Milwaukee despite having previously not found much playoff success. In a postgame interview, Antetokounmpo threw criticism at other NBA stars leaving their teams and forming “superteams” to win titles. “I could’ve gone to a super team … but this is the hard way to do it, and I did it”, he stated . At just 26-years old, Antetokounmpo is already a 2-time NBA MVP and a champion, leaving the door open for him to be the next face of the NBA as a new era of basketball begins.

After defeating last year’s NBA champions in round one, the Phoenix Suns were considered by many to be the favorites to win this year’s title. With the additions of All-Star Point Guard Chris Paul and Head Coach Monty Williams, the Suns massively outperformed expectations this season finishing with the second best record in the Western Conference and making the postseason for the first time in 10 years. A key part of Phoenix’s success was 24-year old All-Star guard Devin Booker, who had a stellar performance in the finals putting up multiple 40-point games. However, after winning the first 2 games of the series, Phoenix then proceeded to lose the next 4 games in a row, something that hadn’t happened to them throughout the entire season. Many fans were excited to see 36-year old Chris Paul potentially win his first NBA championship, but this may have been the first and last chance for the veteran Point Guard to win the title. Paul has been happy with his role on the team, however it has been rumored that he may opt out of his current contract with Phoenix to seek a USD 100 Million deal. However, it remains to be seen if the Suns front office is prepared to offer Paul a contract of that size.
