MXIM - Monolithic Power Systems loses challenge of Maxim subsidiary's patents

In 2019, Maxim Integrated (MXIM) subsidiary Volterra Semiconductor filed suit against Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) for patent infringement.The suit sought damages and an order prohibiting Monolithic Power from selling products that infringed on the patents, which relate to the use of coupled inductors in voltage converters.Monolithic Power the asked the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board to find Volterra's claims "unpatentable."Volterra now announces that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has rejected Monolithic Power's petitions."The Patent Office's decision to reject five separate challenges to the patentability of three Volterra patents confirms the importance of these inventions," says Bruno Kranzen, vice president of Maxim's Cloud and Data Center Business Unit.
