XAR - New world order: Russia North Korea vow to defend interests as ties deepen

Russia and North Korea will work towards establishing a new "equal and fair international order" to defend the interests of the two countries, amid efforts to build a united front against Washington's global dominance.

The countries will "strengthen strategic and tactical cooperation" and set up "a new multi-polarized international order," North Korea's foreign ministry said , following Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui's meetings with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last week. The statement echoes similar efforts by China and Russia for a new world order.

Putin "expressed his willingness to visit North Korea at an early date," North Korea added without disclosing when.

Tensions have been escalating in the Korean Peninsula, with Kim ramping up weapons tests , and the U.S., South Korea and Japan responding by strengthening their combined military exercises.

Moscow and Pyongyang expressed "serious concern over the negative influence of the U.S. and its allied forces' irresponsible and unjust provocative acts." Both sides "agreed to deal with the regional situation through close cooperation."

The statements come nearly a week after U.K. Defense Secretary Grant Shapps declared that the era of the peace dividend is over. "In five years' time, we could be looking at multiple theaters involving Russia, China, Iran and North Korea."
