Like other Canadian provinces, Newfoundland has a rich history of mining. At one point during the late 1800s, Newfoundland was the sixth-largest copper producer in the world. As far as gold mining goes, the province has had fits and starts of prospecting but nothing like other major provinces. Heavy prospecting in the area didn't pick up recently until the 1980s.
