NTDOY - Nintendo offers benefits for same-sex domestic partnerships going against Japanese law
Nintendo ( OTCPK:NTDOY ) updated its corporate social responsibility guidelines on Tuesday and said it will give benefits to employees in same-sex domestic partnerships, despite the fact Japan outlaws gay marriage.
"At Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Japan), we want to create a work environment that supports and empowers each and every one of our unique employees," the company said.
The company added that although same-sex marriages are not currently recognized under Japanese law, the system "ensures employees who are in a domestic partnership with a same-sex partner have the same benefits as employees in an opposite-sex marriage." Nintendo ( OTCPK:NTDOY ) also explained that common-law marriage "will be observed in the same way as a legal marriage."
"By improving our company systems and conducting training, we will continue our work to create an environment where each of our many diverse employees can fully realize their talents," Nintendo continued.
The policy was first introduced in March 2021, Nintendo ( OTCPK:NTDOY ) said, but this is the first time it has publicly acknowledged it.
The video game giant also noted that it had reviewed its regulations on harassment "to clearly prohibit discriminatory comments based on sexual orientation or gender identity, as well as disclosing someone's privately held sexual orientation against their will."
Nintendo ( OTCPK:NTDOY ) shares rose 0.4% to $54.64 in mid-day trading on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Nintendo ( OTCPK:NTDOY ) Switch sales rose 24% year-over-year in the U.K. in June .
