The Nuveen Variable Rate Preferred & Income Fund ( NPFD ) is, as the name suggests, a closed-end fund, or CEF, that claims to invest in a portfolio of preferred stocks that have dividends that vary with some underlying benchmark (usually the yield on U.S. Treasury securities or the Secured Overnight Financing Rate) in order to provide its investors with a very high level of current income. According to the fund’s website :

The Fund seeks to provide a high level of current income and total return by investing in primarily investment grade, variable preferred securities and other variable rate income-producing securities from high quality highly regulated companies such as banks, utilities and insurance companies.
