Pembina Pipeline ( NYSE: PBA ) said Tuesday it signed a memorandum of understanding with Marubeni to jointly develop a low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production facility adjacent to its Redwater complex in Alberta that would supply Japan and other Asian markets.
Pembina ( PBA ) said it has completed initial feasibility studies, and the planned facility would have a design capacity of as much as 185 kilotons/year of hydrogen production, which would be converted into ~1M metric tons/year of low-carbon ammonia that would be transported by rail to Canada's West Coast for shipment to Asian markets.
Under the MoA, Pembina ( PBA ) and Marubeni will focus on completing work critical to the development of the project, including preliminary front-end engineering design; pre-FEED work is expected to be completed by early 2024.
Pembina ( PBA ) said the project potentially would serve as an anchor development to advance efforts to establish a new growth platform known as the Pembina Low Carbon Complex.
