BBQ - Retail sector generates big returns for the first half of the year on re-opening hopes and Reddit buzz
The consumer sector was dominated by the rise of Reddit traders and the re-opening of the retail stores in the first half of the year. Top performing stocks through June 30 included AMC Entertainment (AMC) +2572%, GameStop (GME) +1037%, Takung Art (TKAT) +1024%, Express (EXPR) +613%, J. Jill (JILL) +428% and Build-A-Bear Workshop (BBW) +313%, BBQ Holdings (BBQ) +289% and Dillard's (DDS) +188%. Overall, retail stocks easily outperformed the S&P 500 Index as parts of the U.S. economy reopened faster than anticipated. One of the bigger stories for the first half was the outperformance by legacy automakers in comparison to some of the electric vehicle upstarts. Toyota (TM) +81%, Ford (F) +69% and General Motors (GM) +42% outperformed Tesla (TSLA) -4%, Workhorse Group (WKHS) -16%, Canoo (GOEV) -28% and Lordstown Motors (RIDE) -45% by a comfortable margin.
